The College Admissions Project, a project of the
Young Leadership Council, is a volunteer effort working
to lessen the gap in college admissions between
upper and lower income students. CAP volunteers provide direct support
to New Orleans and Jefferson Parish public high school students (most of whom are first generation college applicants) through the often-overwhelming college admissions process.

The College Admission Project began during the 2007-2008 school year,
working with 51 senior year students. In our third year, we are now
working with over 80 senior year students
and several hundred junior year students.

Background on the Young Leadership Council:
In the spring of 1986, a handful of young New Orleans residents decided to continue their affiliation after working together on several political campaigns. They wanted to tackle problems facing their community. They were young - a few years out of college - and didn't think existing civic or political organizations would afford them opportunities for hands-on involvement.
So, they formed their own organization called the Young Leadership Council (YLC). Their unique and primary focus was leadership through community projects, an idea that differed from most civic and political organizations. On September 19, 1986, this group of illustrious people filed the "Young Leadership Council" (YLC) Articles of Incorporation with the Louisiana Secretary of State.

Twenty-one years later, the YLC lives on under the following mission:

THE YOUNG LEADERSHIP COUNCIL IS A NON-PROFIT, NON-PARTISAN CIVIC ORGANIZATION CREATED TO DEVELOP LEADERSHIP THROUGH COMMUNITY PROJECTS.

Fulfilling that mission, the YLC has raised more than $25 million dollars in support of community projects since its inception. The organization has more than 1,000 members, and is led by a 25-member Board of Directors and four staff members.
